The client had been looking for some considerable time to find a property which was suitable for a specialist children’s home which provided supported care for youngsters leaving mainstream children’s homes and to prepare them for adult life. The home therefore had very specific requirements. The proposed home would accommodate four young people who would be cared for by staff who would work shifts but would not be resident in the premises.

A detached residential dwelling was found and the client appointed us to prepare a planning application for the change of use. We carried out a measured survey and produced a scheme. The dwelling currently had three bedrooms and the proposal increased this to four within the existing first floor accommodation. A supporting Design and Access Statement was produced and the planning application was submitted.

The application was very unpopular with local residents and it was considered at the Planning Committee prior to determination. We spoke at the committee to support the application which was deferred for further consideration. At  second committee meeting we addressed the committee supporting the proposals and Planning Permission was granted.
